However, sometimes when you are in the off season, out of town, recently moved, or just a retired dancer looking to get back into class it can be hard to know where to start and how to find dance classes. As a dancer with experience finding a variety of different dance classes, I have created this easy guide all about how to find dance classes.

How to Find Dance Classes: The Search

Finding dance classes usually starts with a simple search. This might be a google search of “dance classes near me”, searching on social media, or using word of mouth.

This first part of finding dance classes will go into the many ways you might search and look for dance classes to take.

Google Search

This is typically this first way dancers go to look for dance classes. Usually, google will use location services to tailor search results to your area and showcase dance studios and businesses near you.

If you plan on moving or going somewhere else to take dance classes you might want to search “dance classes near (area)”.

Also, be sure to search for the type of dance class you are looking for. Obviously, most dance studios will specify what type of class you are signing up for but it can help to search for the specific genre, age group, or setting of the dance class.

When you get results be sure to check out a studio or businesses reviews, social media, and/or website for more information on classes or to get signed up.

Social Media

Social media is a great way to find dance classes in your area, especially Facebook. Some dancers in cities like New York will also share on social media if they are hosting a pop-up class that you can join.

There are sometimes even groups on Facebook you can join for dancers in your area that can help you find dance classes or social events for dancers.

Social media information on dance classes, however, is typically time sensitive and will usually change based on when you view a post.

When using social media to find dance classes and information about dance classes be sure to check that the information is up to date and recent.

Word of Mouth

Finally, word of mouth is an incredibly useful way of finding and searching for dance classes. Ask around in your social circle or even create a post of Facebook asking for dance classes people recommend and where to take dance classes.

It can be so helpful to hear from someone else experience to make finding the right dance classes easier.

How to Find Dance Classes: Signing Up

Now that you might have found a few dance classes that you want to take its time to sign up! This section will cover the many ways you can sign up for dance classes.

How to Sign Up for Dance Classes

If you are taking classes at a studio, start by checking their website. If there isn’t a place to directly sign up online they will probably have a phone number for you to call and sign up for class.

Lots of drop in studios use their own scheduling platforms or apps like MindBody to facilitate class sign ups. This information will also usually be on the studio or business website.

For dance teachers holding independent classes they might have you use an online form or RSVP via social media and then pay upon arrival. Be sure to stay up to date on their class info and sign up ASAP if there are limited spots.

Most dance businesses and studios will have a 24 hour cancellation policy where if you have prepaid for a class you can get a full refund if you have to cancel more than 24 hours ahead of time. If you cancel with less than 24 hours before the class you do not receive a refund. Be mindful of this when scheduling classes, especially if you are doing so last minute or day off for a class.

Finding Online Dance Classes

Sometimes going in person to a dance class isn’t always possible. Since 2020 there has been a huge boom in the online dance classes offered. While this number has decreased slightly since then, there are still numerous dance classes offered online.

This final section will cover how to find online dance classes to take in the comfort of your own home or remotely in a studio.

Where can I find online dance classes?

Luckily there are a number of well-known reputable dance businesses and studios that offer online classes everyday.

Platforms like STEEZY, CLI Studios, Dance Labs, and Masterclass offer on-demand dance tutorials and classes for dancers of all ages.

Major studios like Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, Mark Morris Dance Group, and the Ailey Extension all offer livestream classes in addition to on-demand classes.

Be sure to also check out social media from your favorite dance companies and dance teachers to see when they might be offering online or Zoom classes. I’ve noticed a number of internationally known companies and dance groups doing this in recent years to make dance more accessible for more student across the world.

If all else fails or you can’t find a class that works for you, there are hundreds of dance tutorials and classes you can take for FREE on Youtube. Just start searching and you can find some great ballet classes, hip hop classes, jazz classes, contemporary classes, and more.
