A journal is my favorite tool to inspire and grow my confidence in and out of the dance studio as a dancer. I’ve also personally seen so many other dancers grow and learn from the process of adding journaling to their life. With a dance journal, you can expect to see your confidence grow, discover your artistry, and uncover new parts of your identity as a dancer.
However, if you don’t know how to start a dance journal it can seem a little daunting. What do you need for a dance journal? What do you write in it? And how do you stick with it? Thats why I’ve broken down starting a dance journal into three easy steps to help you out.

Step 1: Get Your Journaling Supplies
To start a dance journal, you need to have the right supplies to set you up for success. Start by choosing the right journal that will work best for you.
I personally love and recommend the journals by Paperage, which you can find on Amazon. They offer journals in a variety of different colors, paper types, and sizes to fit your needs as you start a dance journal.
My personal favorite is the dotted journal because I can draw pictures, but also have lines to guide me to write entries.
When it comes to writing utensils, I prefer gel pens mostly because I’m left-handed and they smudge the least. I love the S-Gel pens from Sharpie because they write like BUTTER and offer some beautiful colors. If you want to get even more creative with your journaling, feel free to add some highlighters and let the creativity flow!
Step 2: Write Out Your Intentions and Goals with Journaling
What do you want to gain by using this dance journal?
Write out what you hope to learn and what your goals are in one of the first pages of your journal. This way, you can always go back to that through your dance journaling journey and continue to reflect on that statement.
When you finish your first journal or get to the end of a dance season, go back to that statement and notice how you’ve grown since beginning this journal. You might also look at what goals you have accomplished and what you are working towards now.

- What are some goals you hope to reach by starting this journal?
- What are your expectations for starting a dance journal?
- How do you think this journal will impact your life as a dancer?
Step 3: Figure out a Journaling Routine & Experiment
No matter how frequently you journal or how you choose to journal, it is important that you implement a journaling routine that works for you and that is sustainable.
To figure this out, I recommend carrying your journal with you throughout the day for the first week or so you start to implement it. As you carry it with you, try writing in it at the beginning of the day, before and after dance class or rehearsal, at the end of the day, and any other time that you think about it.
Give yourself time to experiment with when and what you like writing in your dance journal. Start to notice when you can write best and dedicate valuable time to your dance journal.
Overall, using your dance journal should work for you, and it should be a productive experience, not a chore. You should also allow the experience to ebb and flow because you might need different things at different times.
Finally, Keep it Up!
To see the best results, you want to keep journaling regularly. By making journaling a regular part of your daily and weekly routine, you’ll be able to see the best impacts on your confidence in and out of the dance studio.
