Reflection Section: Turning Your Answers into Action
Now that you have discovered some questions, here is how you can start using them and putting your answers into action to discover your unique identity as a dancer.
Step 1: Choose 3-5 Questions
Start with at least 3-5 different questions. Go ahead and answer what you can now, but save some for reflection after a dance class, rehearsal, or an improv session.
It is totally fine to go back and switch which questions you ask yourself if you find you are more drawn to answering one than another.
Step 2: Take Some Time to Dance
Before you go into great detail answering and reflecting on your questions, take some time to dance. For you, this might be your regular dance class, rehearsal, or even just improvising in your bedroom.
Some of the questions to discover your unique identity as a dancer will be easier to answer clearly when you have recently been dancing or come from a dance class.
Step 3: Reflect & Answer Afterwards
Now it is time to do some deeper reflection. If you already answered some of the questions, go back and add to your responses. Ask yourself the questions again to reflect after you’ve been dancing.
I also recommend reflecting on this particular movement experience, class, or rehearsal to enhance step 4 and your overall dance journey!
Some BONUS Reflection Questions:
- What were some specific emotions or feelings I had while dancing?
- How was I challenged in a positive way?
- What part of this experience can I take into my dancing in the future?
- Which moments did I feel the most authentic to myself as a dancer?
- What did I learn about myself as a dancer through this experience today?
Step 4: Look for Patterns
As you start to regularly ask and reflect on these questions you’ll probably start to see some patterns. These patterns can help you start to recognize and identify your unique style as a dancer.
You might also see patterns that reveal how you approach dancing, your perspectives in dance, and even your confidence levels. Keep challenging yourself to explore who you are as a dancer through this reflection process, and you’ll see where patterns keep popping up.
Step 5: Explore What Resonates With You
As you make asking some of these questions a regular habit you’ll start to notice what you resonate with as a dancer and what you are drawn to, especially as you notice patterns.
Start to dive further into what consistently resonates with you and use that to discover your unique identity as a dancer. Remember to focus on what feels most authentic to you, not what you think you should like.
Keep Growing and Evolving
Your identity as a dancer will continue to evolve as you grow and gain new experiences as an artist. Keep asking yourself questions like these, and remain open to exploring your identity as a dancer.
