10 Confidence Tips for Dancers
This section is all about the top ten confidence tips I have for dancers. My dancer friends and I have all used these different confidence tips to grow and sustain our confidence in and out of the dance studio and all seen incredible results.
When you start to focus on improving your confidence as a dancer, you will see results you didn’t know were possible both in and out of the dancer studio.
1. Use Positive Self Talk
It can be so easy to slip into the trap of using negative self talk to think of yourself as a dancer. You might see it in both how you talk about yourself out loud with others but it’s also an internal action too.
Start redirecting your thoughts and self talk away from negativity. You don’t have to lean into “toxic positivity” but start to tell yourself you can do something rather than you can’t.
2. Start a Dance Journal
My number one confidence tip for dancers that has personally changed my life is to start a dance journal.
Journaling is an essential practice that will help improve your confidence and self esteem as a dancer. You can literally write anything you want in it.
I personally write my goals, creative ideas, notes, and reflections in my dance journal.

3. Set Attainable Goals
Goal setting is a practice that when done effectively can lead to major boost in your confidence in the dance studio. However, there are a few things you need to make sure you are doing when setting goals to improve your confidence as a dancer.
Make sure your goals are attainable and sustainable for you to achieve within the time frame you set. I recommend starting small with your goals and using those to build up to larger goals.

4. Practice Gratitude
Practicing gratitude is so important for dancers when you want to improve your confidence. Practicing gratitude is exactly what it sounds like – it is making gratitude a practice in your everyday life.
Create a daily habit of writing out or noticing what exactly you are grateful for in your life as a dancer. Notice what you are proud of and areas that you’ve grown in.
When your practice gratitude you might realize how much you actually have to be confident about as a dancer and that will carry itself into the dance studio.
5. Eliminate Comparison
You might have heard that comparison is the thief of joy, and I think that is especially true for dancers.
When you compare yourself to other dancers or maybe the made up image of “perfect” that exists in your head, you don’t recognize all of the things that actually make you unique as a dancer.
This is one of the most essential confidence tips for dancers because if you keep comparing yourself to other dancers, you will never find any reason to have confidence in yourself as a dancer.
6. Use Positive Affirmations
We’ve all heard to use positive affirmations, and that is because they actually work! By speaking something and working to truly embody that affirmation, you start to believe it.
By using affirmations for dancers or creating your own dance affirmations, you can become more confident in yourself overtime.
7. Find People that Inspire You
Surrounding yourself by supportive, inspiring people can truly change your life for the better. Start to ask yourself who you find inspiring in your life and who inspires you to be the best dancer and human you can be.
I recommend you focus on people that you see and actively know but having a role model or public figure you look up to can also help.
Think about what you admire about them and what ways they inspire you. Think about how you can embody those qualities yourself.
8. Dance and Perform for Yourself
As dancers, we are constantly trying to perform for other people and look for other people’s approval. When this is our only focus we can become really drained as dancers.
That’s why you need to create space and time to dance and perform for yourself.
If you struggle to do this ask yourself what you would like to see or know about a dancer when you watch someone perform and dance. Usually the answer is a dancer that is truly happy and having the time of their life being themselves on stage.
9. Redefine Success as a Dancer
Success is so subjective in the dance world. However, sometimes we unintentionally define what is successful and unsuccessful. And that definition of success is usually very temporary or superficial.
That is why you need to redefine what success is to you as a dancer. I recommend equating success to how you feel about yourself as a dancer and the things you have accomplished interpersonally rather than externally.
10. Remember Your ‘Why’ as a Dancer
A lot of motivational speakers and life coaches talk about finding a “why” when defining what you do and why you do it. And while it might sound repetitive and basic, it is truly an incredible confidence tip for dancers.
When you figure out your “why” as a dancer, you assign more value to what you do and allow yourself to stand by that. When you create and truly believe in your “why” for being a dancer you will be empowered to keep going and stay confident in your identity.

Creating Confident Dance Habits

One thing I think dancers misunderstand about building confidence in the dance studio is HOW you do it. Confidence, just like any other dance skill, is built through practice and positive habits.
All of the confidence tips for dancers above can be coupled with a confidence building habit or be practiced.
This section will give you some tips on what are confidence building habits for dancers and how to “practice” confidence.
Put a Confidence Practice Into Your Daily Routine
Start to build your confidence as a dancer by practicing it in your daily routine. This could be as simple as writing out and repeating five positive dance affirmations once a day or doing a journaling reflection everyday.
Whatever dance confidence practice you use, make sure it is sustainable and motivating for you as a dancer to continue and build your confidence over a long period of time.
Hold Yourself Accountable
The best thing that will help you grow and sustain your confidence as a dancer is consistency. Therefore you need to hold yourself accountable. Use a planner or a daily checklist to track your confidence habits and keep the growth going.
My personal favorite habit tracker is Finch for all sorts of daily habits to improve your mental health. But there are lots of great habit trackers out there to choose from. So find what works and keep yourself accountable because being a confident dancer is so worth it.
Figure Out What Works for You
When it comes to following confidence tips for dancers, different things will work for different dancers. That is why it is so important to recognize what works for you and keeps you motivated.
You don’t need to follow every piece of confidence advice for dancers in this post to become a more confident dancer. All you need to do is find what works for you and stick with it. If you find something else that works along the way DO THAT! If it makes you feel confident as a dancer, do it.
