Dance Class Hair
How do Dancers Wear Their Hair?
Because of the demands of dance class, us dancers will typically wear our hair up and back when we are dancing. It can be challenging to dance during class with your hair getting in your way.
Different dance genres will sometimes also require specific hairstyles to fit the aesthetic or performance needs. This is usually seen with a ballet bun or updo for ballet classes and wearing hair down for pom and dance team styles.
How Should I Do My Hair for Dance Class?
Before you get ready to do your hair for dance class, first keep in mind any requirements your studio or place you are dancing might have for hair. Some dance studios keep a uniform when it comes to hair and have certain requirements.
Once you’ve considered any studio requirements, start to think about the type of dance style you are doing and what you are required to do. How might your hair get in the way? What will be most comfortable for you? Ask yourself these questions to get started and decide how to do your dance class hair.
Once you’ve figured out what you might need to do with your hair for dance class you can start to experiment with some fun and varied styles, some of which you can find ideas for in this post!

Bun Hairstyles for Dance Class
A bun is an essential dance class hairstyle that every dancer needs to master and it’s also one that almost every dancer is capable of doing.
However, just because this classic dancer hairstyle is common doesn’t mean it has to be boring.
Check out some of my favorite variations of dancer hair buns including the classic ballet bun or cinnamon bun to a braided bun.
1. Ballet Bun
Every dancer must master the essential ballet bun at one time or another. There are so many versions of the ballet bun you can do and you can even add some accessories for more variety with your ballet buns.

3. Donut Bun
This is a bun commonly worn by younger competition dancers but that can work for almost anyone.
While this style is possible to do without a donut bun maker or accessory it is most easily done with one especially if you have thinner hair. You can also cut out the toe of an old sock and roll it up for the same thing.

4. Braided Bun
A braided ballet bun is one of the easiest way to make your dance class hairstyles more unique. Try doing one with a French braid into a bun or simply twisting a braid into a bun.
Make sure to use lots of hair pins and maybe even a hairnet to help this hairstyle stay in place for all of dance class.
5. Low Bun
A low bun is a classic way to get your dance class hair done for ballet class or any other style of dance. This dance hairstyle is also super easy for dancers with shorter hair to do.
Other Updo Hairstyles for Dance Class
If you want your hair up but a single hair bun just isn’t for you these other up do dance class hairstyles are perfect for you.
Like any dancer hairstyle they will take practice but with a little help and some great tutorials (which I’ve linked) you can master them in no time.
6. French Twist
The French twist is one of the most essential dancer hairstyles. It can be used for nearly every style of dance if you want a sophisticated way to pin your hair up and keep it out of your face all day.
While it can be one of the harder dancer hairstyles to master, I guarantee you’ll get there with a little bit of practice and some of the tips and tutorials linked below!
