Everyone’s hair is different and therefore we all have different needs when it comes to dance competition hair products. Dancers with curly or textured hair are going to typically use and need different products than dancers with straight or fine hair.

Starting Your Dance Competition Hair Kit
Once you’ve pulled some of the hair products you already own grab a bag to put your essentials in. I recommend a small tote bag with organizers or a makeup caddy. Make sure your bag is big enough to stay organized and fit all of your dance hair needs.

1. Hair Brush
The first thing you’ll definitely need in your collection of dance competition hair essentials is a hair brush. I recommend a basic wet brush for styling your hair, detangling, and after you’ve had a full competition day when you wash it.
You can get a wet brush in a variety of shapes and sizes, making it a great choice for dance competitions. The one I’ve linked above from Amazon comes in a two pack, so you can have one for your dance bag and one for your dance competition bag!
2. Styling Combs
The comb set linked above has changed my life when I’m doing any dance performance hairstyles. Each comb in the set makes taming frizzy hair and hair with product in it so much easier than without a comb. I cannot recommend this dance competition hair essential more!
3. Hair Wax
Hair wax has blown up on places like TikTok and instagram recently because it is a great way to slick back your hair and tame stubborn fly aways. Likewise, it is perfect for your collection of dance competition hair essentials.
I’ve linked one of the best and most popular hair wax sticks for your dance competition hair needs above! This one from Kitsch is also vegan and cruelty free. It also is made with castor oil to keep your healthy and avoid residue.
4. Spray Water Bottle
If you want to get your hair as slicked back and style ready as possible I highly recommend using a spray bottle with water. This will help prep your hair to style and slick back with hairspray or hair gel.
5. Hair Gel
Slick your hair back even more with some great hair gel. Hair gel is a great dance hair essential that can shape your hair in any style you need it to be in to shine at your next dance competition.
I recommend using one of the combs I have above to help shape your hair with the gel and spraying water on your hair first to make it easier to use and manage the hair gel.
The best hair gel I have used is the instant freeze from Aussie. Don’t use too much though because this one does build up easily.

6. Hair Spray
Set your hairstyle and keep it up with some hairspray. This is a must have dance competition hair essential for every dancer, regardless of whether you use any of the other essentials on this list.
Hairspray is an absolute MUST for all dancers no matter what hairstyle you are doing because it will set any other products you use and keep your hair looking performance ready throughout the dance competition day.
Again, I recommend Instant Freeze from Aussie because it is super strong and easy to use. The one I have linked from amazon also comes in a three pack so you will never be short on hairspray during dance competition season!
7. Hair Mousse
If you already have hairspray or hair gel this one might be optional. However, if you are styling your hair in curls or need some extra volume for your dance competition hair, I recommend adding some mousse to your dance competition hair kit.
Mousse is great to help your hair hold a curl or particular style and keep it from getting frizzy after a full day at a dance competition.
8. Hair Ties
Unless you are wearing your hair down, you are going to need hair ties or hair elastics in your dance competition hair kit. I recommend using some strong hair ties and if your hair is thick maybe using more than one for your dance competition hairstyle.

Grab some hair barrettes and hair clips to secure any bangs, loose hairs, or to keep head pieces in during your dance competition. I recommend the linked double grip hair clips by revlon to keep your hair secure during a full day of dancing!
11. Bun Maker
You might only need this dance competition hair essential if your studio requires it but it is useful to have if you have to do any bun hair styles. Some kits like the one I have linked above include hair pins, hair nets, and hair ties.
12. Hair Nets
This is another dance competition hair essential you might not always need but it is very useful to have on hand, especially if you are doing any type of bun hairstyles. A hair net will keep your hairstyle neat and make it easier to tame stray hairs in a bun.
13. Styling Tools
Finally you might want to pack some styling tools like a flat iron, hair dryer, or curling iron in case you have to (or want to) have a particular style done. I know some dancers with curly hair that like to use a hair volumizer or heated straightening brush to prep their hair for styling.
I recommend packing your favorite tools just in case the opportunity comes up to use them.
