Why Create a Dance Vision Board?
Research has shown that when you start to see your goals, hopes, and dreams visually you will be more motivated to work towards them.
By creating a dance vision board you are visualizing where you want to be and what you want to accomplish. Visualization is an incredibly powerful technique. The most elite performers (especially dancers) use visualization to remain confident and motivated to accomplishing their goals.
When you see your dance goals daily through the medium of your dance vision board, they will start to become more attainable and real along your dance journey.

Physical vs. Digital: Which Vision Board Format to Choose
When it comes to creating your dance vision board you’ll want to choose the right vision board format for you. This section will outline the two different formats you can use to create your dancer vision board, digital and physical, and what you’ll need to do each one.
Classic Physical Vision Board

This vision board is best if you really enjoy the process of looking for photos and putting things together in a more tactile way. Of the two format options, this one is definitely more intentional.
However, It is more time consuming, more difficult to edit if your goals change during the year, and its something you’ll likely have to keep it in one place.
The materials you’ll need
- Cork board, foam core, or poster board
- Scrapbook paper– LOVE these watercolor design options
- Magazine and image cut outs – I love the book option linked on Amazon
- Markers
- Tape or glue
Creating a Digital Dance Vision Board

This vision board option is a great way to make your vision board more portable and easy to update. One of the only drawbacks is it can easily become less intentional than a physical vision board.
One of my favorite things about creating a digital dance vision board is that I can customize it to a lot of different formats and sizes. I can have one for my phone background, desktop wallpaper, and even print it out.
What you need to create a digital dance vision board or vision board wallpaper
- Digital art platform – Canva, Adobe Express, or photo collage app
- Images and graphics

Setting Goals for Your Dance Vision Board
Before sitting down to create your vision board, ask yourself about your goals, dreams, and ideas for the new year. What plans do you already have in place? What are some things you wish to continue from last year? What do your goals involve? Which goals are tangible and which goals are intangible?
However you define your goals for the next year, both in and outside of dance, make a list in some form before sitting down to create your vision board. This will help you gather some idea of how you can represent these goals on your vision board.
The rest of this section will go over how to visualize different types of dance goals and put them on your dancer vision board.
Technical and Training Goals

Technical and training goals are dance goals that are usually related to a specific skill or ability you want to acquire.
These might be accomplishing a number of turns, getting a particular extension stronger, consistently practicing a conditioning routine.
Then to visualize those on your vision board you might put an image of a dancer turning, an image of a particular stretch or exercise your can work on, or showing a habit tracker.
Performance and Artistic Goals

Performance and artistic goals are goals that relate to what you want to accomplish and experience as a performer and dance artist.
Some of these goals might include performing a particular role in a show, choreographing a new dance piece, or showing up more as a dancer on social media.
To visualize these types of goals on your vision board you can put the name of the role you want to perform, the image of a stage, or maybe an image of a dancer you admire and want to be like.
Wellness, Mindset, and Non-Dance Goals

We all know that being a dancer impacts every aspect of your life. That’s why this final section of goals for your vision board goes beyond your life inside the dance studio.
These goals focus on your well being, confidence, and how you take care of yourself as a human in your everyday life.
Some examples might be to drink more water, practice meditation, and feel more confident.
To visualize these goals on your vision board you might put an image of a glass of water, someone meditating, and an image of you that looks like your most confident self.
Your Step-by-Step Creation Guide

This section will go over in simple steps how to start creating your dance vision board today! This creation guide will go step-by-step how to make the most effective dance vision board.
Phase 1: Brain Dump and Clarity
When it comes to creating your vision board for dance you want to keep your goals as specific as possible.
That’s why before even putting your vision board together you want to write down 5-10 super specific goals you want to accomplish. Go into detail with how you will accomplish them and how you want to feel when you accomplish that goal.
Getting specific in this step will make putting your actual vision board together easier.
Phase 2: Curating the Visuals
Now that you know your dance goals, it’s time to start choosing your visuals for your vision board.
I recommend choosing a variety of images of both yourself and generic images of what you aspire to. This way your vision board can be both something you aspire to and something you actually see as possible for you.
When creating my own vision board I choose images of me dancing or looking confident in order to associate those feelings of what those images embody with my future goals.
Phase 3: Affirmations and Keywords
With your vision board you can’t just have a lot of images with no context. However, writing multiple long sentences isn’t exactly aesthetically pleasing either.
That’s why you need to come up with specific words and affirmations to add to your vision board to push you towards your goals.
I recommend using short, present tense phrases like “I am confident” or “I am strong” in your vision board.
Phase 4: Placement and Organization
There is no one right way to organize and set up your vision board. However, I do have a few recommendations for making your board as motivating as possible.
I recommend putting one over arching goal in the center. For me this is a goal based more around how I want to feel and the mindset I want to carry through the year as I work towards all the other goals.
I then place all the other goals around that, having them branch out from that central goal mindset. For example, in 2025 my central theme was building myself up and knowing I can be “that girl” so I put phrases and images related to that in the center.
If you have multiple larger or over arching goals, make those the most prominent on the board and have other smaller goals surround them.

Beyond the Board: Making Your Vision Board Work
Now that the creation is done its time to make your vision board work for you. It won’t be useful as decoration alone!
This section will walk you through how to make your dance vision board work for you and how and when to make changes to your vision board.
Part of Your Routine
Once you’ve completed your board, place it wherever it will be most effective for you on a daily basis. This way it will be a routine reminder of your goals and what you hope to accomplish.
You might want to create a daily ritual of looking at your board daily and then writing a journal reflection about what goal you are focusing on right now.
I also recommend writing out some affirmations to stay motivated and focused on your goals. Try repeating these affirmations daily as you start to live out your vision board.
Checking In
As we go through life, our goals change. So it is only natural that you might want to alter your dance goals and vision board.
Try to check in with your dance goals every 1-3 months and make changes to your vision board if you add or change anything.
If a goal has been met, add a new one or celebrate it. If a goal is no longer serving you add one that will. The best part of creating a vision board for your dance goals is that you have the power to change it.
Important Reminders When Troubleshooting
Remember, you don’t have to try and accomplish everything on your board. Your board is simply a representation of your aspirations.
If you start to get overwhelmed by your goals or feel discouraged remind yourself that the journey to reaching your dance goals is supposed to be long term. Sometimes you’ll also be reaching goals you never knew you had.
The most important thing is to stay true to what you want as a dancer and grow your confidence through your dance goals journey.
