Setting Your Dance Goals and Intentions
As we get started on your dance glow up journey it is important for you to set goals and intentions.
Start by asking yourself some of the following questions:
- What am I already making progress on in my life as a dancer?
- Which things do I want to continue to improve on?
- What are some habits I want to implement in my life?
- Where do I want to be at the end of this “era” of my dance journey?
- How confidently do I feel about accomplishing my goals?
Asking yourself these questions and similar ones can help you decide what is most important in your dance glow up journey and which steps you should prioritize. When you answer those questions you are ready to get started on your dance glow up journey!
The next section will go over some basic habits and tips for starting your dancer glow up. By setting intentions for even basic habits and routines you will be more likely to achieve your dance glow up.

The Basics for a Dancer Glow Up
Before we get started we have to cover the basics required to achieve your dance glow up. These include basic healthy habits that every human needs to be doing already. Improving and making changes with these small things can truly make a big impact on the rest of your life as a dancer and everyday.
Start Building Healthy Habits
To truly have a dance glow up this year you need to look at and start building basic healthy habits. Some of these might seem really simple but they can make a HUGE difference when it comes to achieving your dance goals and dance glow up.
Writing each healthy habit down that you want to implement into your life can be incredibly helpful.
What are some healthy habits for dancers?
As dancers, our body is our instrument but so is our mind. Staying healthy is one of the most important things we can do as dancers. This means we need to take care of ourselves physically and mentally.
Some important healthy habits all dancers should implement into their personal routine include getting at least eight hours of sleep, drinking enough water, practicing proper nutrition, practicing mindfulness or meditating, and practicing proper hygiene.
The next few sections will go over some of these basic healthy habits and give you the best tips for how they can help you towards your dance glow up.
Glow Up Healthy Habit #1: Prioritize Rest
Obviously rest is extremely important for dancers, we won’t have enough energy to perform and dance without it.
Prioritize rest by getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night and having at least one full recovery or rest day a week where you are not dancing or training for dance.
Rest is important for dancers because it allows our bodies to recover properly, reducing fatigue and the risk for injury.
Getting enough rest as a dancer will not only help you have a dance glow up but also just a glow up in the rest of your life!
Glow Up Healthy Habit #2: Staying Hydrated
As dancers we obviously sweat a lot. Which also means we need to stay hydrated and replenish all of the water we lose. You’ll want to aim to drink about 12-15 cups of water a day.
I also highly recommend hydration boosters like Liquid IV to enhance your hydration.

Glow Up Healthy Habit #3: Practice Proper Dance Nutrition
Nutrition is crucial to our lives as dancers. We need to fuel our bodies with the proper amount of nutrients to dance for hours on end during classes, rehearsals, and performances.
Make sure each meal incorporates protein, fats, and carbohydrates.

Glow Up Healthy Habit #4: Practice Proper Hygiene
As dancers we all know that hygiene is incredibly important. Setting a routine to practice proper hygiene can be very effective as you work towards your dance glow up this year.
Some hygiene routines you want to make sure you set for your dance glow up might include:
- Shower and bath routine
- Skincare routine
- Oral hygiene routine
- Sleep hygiene- turning your phone off a little while before bed, keeping your bedroom relaxing, and getting up and going to bed at the same time.
Glow Up Healthy Habit #5: Practicing Mindfulness
Mindfulness and meditation can be an amazing habit for dancers to reduce stress and anxiety. It will help you feel stronger mentally as a dancer even if you just try practicing it for five minutes every day.
Overtime, mindfulness can really change your life and make you feel more calm.
Practice mindfulness by writing in a journal, listening to a meditation audio, or simply practicing some mindfulness breathing exercises are some great ways to incorporate this dance glow up habit.

Glowing Up in the Dance Studio
Once you have started to set your dance glow up goals and implement the basic healthy habits it is time to start growing in the dance studio. This section will outline some habits and tips to help you have a dance glow up in the dance studio.
Create a Warm Up Routine
Creating a warm up routine you can use before dance classes, competitions, performances, and rehearsals can be very beneficial to your body and career as a dancer.
Even if you have a class designed to warm up your body doing a pre-dance class warm up. Warming up doesn’t just mean stretching, you have to actually get your blood pumping.
A pre class warm up should help improve your mobility, get blood pumping to your muscles, and get your heart rate up.
Here are some of the best exercises you can include in your personal warm up:
- Jumping Jacks
- Leg swings- Standing or lying down
- Lunges
- Planks
- Releves or Calf Raises
- Body Isolations- Head, shoulders, torso, hips, and ankles
- Small jumps- Prances
- Squats
- Active straddle stretch
Having a warm up routine can improve your strength, flexibility, and performance as a dancer to help you get even more out of class and rehearsal. Overtime you might find that you are dancing and performing stronger, glowing up and improving as a dancer.
Write Down and Review Your Dance Corrections
Whenever you receive corrections and notes in class and rehearsal write them down. You can do this after class or during if your instructor allows you to keep a journal close by.
Review your notes after class and before your next one. This way you can think about them and apply each correction properly in order to improve faster.
You can also share this habit with friends if you are in the process of cleaning dances for a competition or performance. That way you all are working as a team to glow up together!
Practice and Review
What is the point of dancing if you don’t practice? Carve out time to help yourself review choreography, dance combinations, and tricks outside of class or rehearsal. This way you can walk into the studio more prepared.
This is an important habit for both pre-professional and professional dancers. Practicing will also keep you ready for performances and helps reduce your performance anxiety.
Cross Train
Long gone are the days of believing that strength training and cardio will harm you as a dancer. It is crucial that all dancers incorporate some form of cross training into their personal conditioning routine outside of dance class.
Cross training means different things for different dancers but typically it means working in capacities that we wouldn’t spend as much time on in the dance studio. For some people this is more cardio and endurance. For others it is more strength and agility.
Practice Performing in the Studio
We always want to put our best foot forward whenever we are dancing. However, taking that one step forward and going 110% in the studio can really help you long-term.
Smile and demonstrate performance quality in your body and give your dancing all the energy you can.
Doing this will help you become a stronger performer and prepare for difficult dance routines and performances. You will build up your stamina and performances quality over time and ultimately become a better dancer and performer.
Have a Cool Down and Recovery Routine
Just like warming up is important, cooling down and recovering is just as important. It helps your body recover and return to a normal resting state.
Cool down by stretching and rolling through the body. You can also incorporate muscle rolling to reduce muscle tightness and fatigue.
Overtime, incorporating this habit into your dance glow up plan can improve your performance and abilities as a dancer because you’ll feel less fatigued and stronger.
Dancer Lifestyle Glow Up Tips
Now that you’re familiar with some healthy habits for dancers and glow up habits for the dance studio it’s time to learn about some of the more fun ways you can have a dance glow up this year.

Revisit or Clean Out Your Dance Wardrobe
Revisiting your collection of dance clothing to clean out some of the old clothes you aren’t wearing and add some new pieces can help revitalize your dance wardrobe and personal style.
Create a Makeup Routine
Creating a makeup routine can help you find the products you like and help you feel more confident in and out of the dance studio.
Find what works for you and makes you feel confident. This will help you save time when you have to wear makeup for a performances or auditions in the future.
Try Journaling
I believe that journaling truly changed my life for the better as a dancer and I would not have been able to improve the way I did without it.

With all the dancing we see online, it can be easy to compare our growth to what we see in a few pictures and five second videos. Taking a social media break can help you achieve your dance glow up because it will help you stay present in your own life and progress as a dancer.
Even if your break is just temporary, it will truly improve your mental health and relationship with social media.
Try a New Hobby
Having hobbies and interests outside of your life as a dancer is incredibly important. Hobbies like crafting, reading, writing, biking, hiking, or baking outside of dance can improve your mental health and help you become a more well rounded person.
You can even find hobbies that involve a social element to find a new social group outside of the dance studio.
