What Should You Wear to Dance Auditions
Unfortunately, most dance auditions don’t have a specified dress code. There technically isn’t anything that you have to wear to a dance audition but you should wear something that reflects the nature of the audition and something that you are also confident in.
Over the next few sections I have included a few different specific audition types and what to wear to them.
What to Wear to a Dance Team Tryout
Dance team try outs typically call for what you would be wearing to those practices and games. Be sure to research the team you are trying out for to see what they typically wear for performances, games, and practices.
When it comes to what to wear to a dance team tryout, your best bet is typically going to be dance shorts or “hot pants” and a sports bra or dance top.

What to Wear to a Dance Audition for a Musical
For musical dance auditions you have a lot of options for what to wear. No matter what you wear for a musical audition, it should be something that you can move best in.
A musical audition is your opportunity to get a little more creative with your audition outfits. Some dancers will wear some version of a skirt/dress outfit for a musical theatre audition. Others might wear a crop top and leggings or leotard and tights.
No matter what you wear, try and match the vibe of the show or company you are auditioning for.

What to Wear to a Ballet Audition
For ballet auditions you should wear what you would typically wear for a ballet class. This is usually a solid colored leotard, tights, and an optional skirt for female dancers. For male dancers this is usually a fitted, solid colored t-shirt and tights.
What Color Leotard Should I Wear?
For a ballet audition, there usually isn’t a specific color you should wear. If you want to play it safe a black leotard is always a good bet.
Whatever color leotard you wear a solid color is usually best to be less distracting and help you be seen better.

What to Wear to a College Dance Audition
For college dance auditions your outfit should depend on what type of program you are auditioning for.
Lots of college dancers wear a leotard with black tights over the leotard to compliment multiple styles of dance.
Some schools that are more ballet centered may prefer a leotard and pink tights.
Be sure to do your research on the program you are auditioning for and what the audition components are to be the most prepared and choose the right outfit.

What to Wear to a Contemporary Dance Audition
Contemporary dance is all about the flow of your movement. Whatever you end up wearing to a contemporary dance audition, you want to make sure it fits with the movement and the group you are auditioning for.
Sometimes, you might want to wear a leotard with black tights. Other times it might be a sports bra, flowy top, and joggers. Be sure to bring a variety of outfit options to your next contemporary audition.
This is when it is very beneficial to do your research and learn what is best for you to wear to a contemporary dance audition.
