Setting and achieving new goals is an essential part of being a dancer. As a dancer still dancing in college, I know how powerful setting the right goals can be. That’s why I am giving you strategies my dance friends and I use to make and achieve all different types of goals in dance class.

How to Set Dance Goals
Tip #1: Know Why You Love to Dance
Identifying and knowing WHY you love to dance and why you are chasing your goal is crucial to the dance goal setting process. Think of all of the reasons you love dancing, why you have continued to love dancing, and what makes you want to keep dancing.
Once you know and identify the reasons you love to dance and love being a dancer, you will be able to keep driving towards you goals, especially on the hard days.
Make sure to write these reasons down read them daily as you move towards accomplishing your goals to motivate you along you dance goal journey.
Tip #2: Write Out Your Goals
Writing your goals down in a journal or planner can help you visualize them and have a solid idea of what you want to accomplish. To achieve your goals you MUST have a clear idea of WHAT it is you want to do as a dancer by completing your goal.

Tip #3: What’s Your Motivation?
Why you want or need to accomplish a particular dance goal is a great way to drive you forward through all of the hard work. Whether you want to master a particular dance skill, receive an award, be cast in a role, or just improve your self-confidence you have to know WHY you want to do that.
For example, if your goal is to master a triple pirouette in time for your dance recital in three months then your motivation would be the dance recital.
For more help identifying your motivation ask yourself some of the following questions:
- What will the benefits be if I work towards this goal?
- How will I see the results?
- Is there a time frame? If so what is it?

Tip #4: Know the Path Ahead
All dancers know we can not simply hope for something to happen, we have to work for all that we do! That is why when we set goals as dancers we MUST have a clear plan and do the work to accomplish them.
Once you have determined your goal, write out what you will do to move towards that goal. You shouldn’t just have one strategy or one thing you plan to do, you have to work in a variety of ways to accomplish your goal.
For example, if your goal is to win a solo award at your next dance competition, you can’t just say you will practice your solo every day. Maybe you will plan to ask for feedback from your friends and family, take a video of yourself doing it, break down a particularly hard section, or do exercises to become stronger in your solo skills. I recommend having at least three different strategies for moving on the path towards your goal.
Tip #5: Identify Potential Obstacles
As with any goals, there will likely be potential obstacles you will encounter as you move towards your dance goals. It is impossible to move forward with your goals and not plan for any problems along the way. You need to brainstorm potential problems and realistic obstacles you could encounter.
An obstacle could be as simple as the amount of time you have to practice dancing on a daily basis. However, once you identify any obstacles you can plan for how you will navigate around them. If you might not have enough time to practice every day, maybe you will practice longer on the weekends. Or, if you can’t ask your dance teacher for feedback on a given day, record yourself and show them later.
Tip #6: Identify Possible Rewards
Just like you have to plan and know potential obstacles along your dance goal journey, you should identify all of the possible rewards your goal and work will bring.
If you want to master a certain skill for the dance or show you are working on, how might that skill help you in other ways? How will the exercises you do to strengthen that dance skill help you elsewhere with your technique? This is important because it can give you even more motivation as you achieve your dance goal.
Tip #7: Document the Process
Documenting your dance goal process is an excellent way to find motivation and keep track of your goal journey. This can also help you reflect and affirm yourself once you have achieved your dance goals.
